about

A kinetic sculpture for piano harp, two violin bows and two windscreen wiper motors. The work applies the idea of extended technique spatially to the instrument, building a physical extension to the piano which enables it to be played anew. Two guitar strings are attached via springs to a pair of strings in the bass register of the piano, the guitar strings extend horizontally from the instrument and are played by two automated bows.

The sound is entirely acoustic, the piano used primarily as an amplifier to sympathetically resonate with the vibrations of the bowed strings. In spite of its size and weight the work was deliberately conceived of as a mobile sculpture, which required no mains power (it runs from a caravan battery) and no loudspeakers.

Recorded in 2007 at Dartington College of Arts.
