about

A kinetic sculpture for an electric guitar, guitar amp and wheelchair motor.
The work initially stemmed from the ambition to construct a Leslie Cabinet inside which the audience could stand. It also followed a period of working on a collaborative performance with Matthew Appleby which involved automating classic rock instruments. But here, rather than motors spinning objects against the strings the motor spins the entire instrument.

An economy of means has been important to me in the work I make from this point onwards, so here the system that produces the sound is the same system which diffuses it around the space. Sound is produced by the vibrations from the motor which pass through the neck of the guitar and by the strings’ motion through the air. The acoustic of the space and subtle Doppler shifts of tone from the moving speaker modulate this endless chord.

Recorded in 2008 at Dartington College of Arts.
